United States Postal Service
First Day of Issue Ceremonies:

March 3

12 Noon
Northeastern Deciduous Forest
United States Postal Service

Featured on this sheet of 10 stamps is a painting by artist John D. Dawson.  Although the scene itself is imaginary, all of the species depicted can be found in deciduous forests of the Northeast.

Mr. Dawson is a 1959 graduate of the Art Center School in Los Angeles, CA. He established himself as a natural history artist in the mid 70’s and has painted animals and birds for articles, posters, nature guides, first class stamps, and zoo signs.  What they all have in common is Dawson’s meticulous attention to detail.  Relying on extensive research, specimen studies, interviews with experts, and his numerous personal files of recorded field observations and field sketches.  Dawson spends long days at the drawing board getting every detail correct.

In addition the U.S. Postal Service will have available for sale “The Artist’s Sketchbook”: Northeast Deciduous Forest, a collection of drawings made by John D. Dawson for the Nature of America stamp series.  Paintings by Dawson appear on every stamp pane in this popular series, which was developed by the Postal Service to promote appreciation of major plant and animal communities (biomes) in the United States.  All of the panes depict biomes that have been carefully identified and recommended by field biologists.

In this Sketchbook, it is easy to see how much attention the artist gives to even the smallest of details.  For example: trying to precisely render the size, shape, number, and positions of tiny fruit dots on the leaflets of ferns.  Each two page spread includes one of the ten forest stamps, as well as color sketches and handwritten notes by Dawson.  Each turn of the page brings new appreciation for the nature of America and for this artist’s extraordinary vision.

Special Feature - For the first time!
The Garden Bouquet Stamped Stationery will be available for purchase at the United States Postal Service booth.

In addition to the United States Postal Service’s philatelic sales area where one can purchase all of the current stamps and related material, there will also be a USPS Retail Gift Booth containing the latest selection of gifts, from stamp pins to framed stamp pieces.
