JOE SAVARESE TO BE HONORED AS ASDA "MAN OF THE YEAR"
ASDA Executive Vice President, Joseph B. Savarese, will be honored for his 30 years of service to philately and the stamp industry by being named ASDA's "Man of the Year" at a gala dinner dance to be held in Washington, DC on May 29, 2006, as one of the many highlights of the 2006 International Philatelic Exhibition.
Known throughout the philatelic community for his innovative style and fresh ideas, Joe has spent his entire career involved with trade associations. Having joined the ASDA in 1976 as Show Director, Joe became Executive Director and Executive Vice President in 1979.
Among the innovations implemented during Joe's tenure have been the extensive youth and education programs, developing Teacher Lesson Plans, using stamps in the classrooms, Library Exhibits on Stamp Collecting, "My Stamp Album" and The Mega Events. Consultant to Ameripex 86, Committee Member of World Columbian Stamp Expo 92, consultant to USPS for World Stamp Expo 89, consultant/manager World Stamp Expo 2000 and a Director of Washington 2006 International Exhibition. Joe established the ASDA website, created various on-line services, upgraded various member benefits, the modernization of the newsletter and directory, and the institution of ASDA's Industry Planning Conferences.
Among previously honored with the Man of the Year Award were Robert A. Siegel, Lewis Shull, John G. Ross, Pat Herst, Kurt Weishaupt, Dickey Rustin, Leo Scarlet, Elizabeth C. Pope, Azeezaly S. Jaffer and Dr. Ray Ameen.
RECIPIENT OF JOHN G. ROSS AWARD
The American Stamp Dealers Association Inc. established the John G. Ross award in 2003. This award is given in recognition of an individual’s distinguished service to the hobby.
We are pleased to announce Gordon C. Morison has been chosen to receive this prestigious award.
The award will be presented at the ASDA awards and Man of the Year dinner, which will be held on Monday, May 29, 2006, 6:30 p.m. at the Washington Convention Center, Washington D.C.
Gordon C. Morison served with the U.S. Postal Service for 22 years before retiring in 1992. For the last 14, he was Assistant Postmaster General. His responsibilities spanned public communications and marketing. For the entire time at the Postal Service, despite additional duties, he was responsible for U.S. postage stamps.
He introduced the American Music Series, which was inaugurated with the big selling Elvis Presley stamp. He developed joint stamp issues with other postal administrations to expand philatelic markets.
Since retiring, he has worked as a consultant, traveling to 35 countries for his clients. He is now Executive Director of Washington 2006, the World Philatelic Exhibition scheduled for May 27- June 3, 2006 at the Washington Convention Center.
A stamp collector since he was 16, he conceived the idea of the Champion of Champions World Series of Philately when chaired the 1968 American Philatelic Society Convention in Rochester, NY.
He was born in Sayre, PA, received his bachelors degree from Syracuse University and his masters degree in economics from Duke University.
He lives in Potomac, MD and has two children and three granddaughters.
